- Create awareness on breast and cervical cancers
- Explain signs and symptoms, early recognition of breast &
cervical
cancers including breast self examination.
- Update health care professionals on recent advances in the
Epidemiology of cancers in women.
- Update health care professionals on recent advances in the genetics,
prevention and novel therapies of breast cancers.
- Review new approaches in the diagnosis and staging of breast
& cervical cancers.
- Description of standard and supportive care for early and advanced
stages of breast and cervical cancers.

The University of Chicago has a long tradition of excellence in cancer
research.
This tradition includes;- the 1927 discovery by Dr. Herman
Joseph Muller of the production and quantitation of the rate of mutations
induced in the Drosophila genome by means of irradiation which led
to his Nobel Prize in 1946,
- the 1941 discovery of the remarkable effects
of hormone therapy on prostate and breast cancer culminating in the
1963 Nobel Prize to Dr. Charles Huggins,
- the 1942 discovery of the
striking effectiveness of nitrogen
mustard against Hodgkin Disease by Dr. Leon Jacobson, former Dean
of the BSD, and
- the 1971 discovery of the 9;22 translocation creating
the Philadelphia chromosome in CML culminating in the 1998 National
Medal of Science to Dr. Janet D. Rowley, for her discovery of chromosomal
breakpoints and their role in cancer.
The University of Chicago Cancer
Research Center (UCCRC), founded in 1973 under the leadership of the
first director Dr. John E. Ultmann, was established as a multidisciplinary,
matrix rogram of basic and clinical research in cancer. It is within
this rich environment that our program in cancer is conducted.
